In order to be able to measure the progress of players and the efficacy of our player and coach development programs, we have established baseline testing for House League players. These tests will help us establish what the normal range of ability within an age group is and then, in years to come, see if the approaches we take to skill development and coach development are helping us move the range upwards at both the low and high ends.
To do this, we hope to get as many U6 to U10 players participating as possible, but we really want to stress that this will work best if teams choose to do this all together. If it is left with individual players to decide if they want to do it, we worry that we will not get a true representation of the rangle of ability within the age groups.
The following information will be asked of each player, and the results will not be published (they are for internal use only):
- Month & year born (to see if there are variations between early/late borns in each year)
- Preferred foot (to see if there are correlations between right or left football and being at the higher or lower end of the range)
- Number of years the player has played soccer
Once this information is gathered, we will run 3 skill tests that will take about 1 minute each. Testing stations, run by Vancouver United Staff Coaches will be set up at allocated fields, and we will try to run another skill testing session towards the end of the season.
Teams do not need to book in advance, but teams are encouraged to participate together. A team of 12 players should get through the testing session in about 5 to 7 minutes.
Station 1: Wall Pass
How many passes against a bench can a player make in 1 minute. Players must stay behind a line 3 yards from the bench.
Station 2: Modified Keep Up
How many times can the player keep the ball in the air, allowing for up to 1 bounce on the ground between touchs and staying within a 6 yard x 6 yard marked box. When the ball bounces twice in a row or leave the box, the turn is over.
Station 3: Dribbling Through Cones
Players start and finish at the same point bt must dribble in a prescribed way around 4 cones
